Über Jian

I’m Jian Cheng, a professional Mandarin Chinese teacher for learners who study Chinese as a foreign language. My goal is simple: to help you speak Chinese naturally, understand it deeply, and enjoy the process from your very first lesson. Whether you are starting from zero, preparing for HSK, improving your business Chinese, or learning for travel and culture, I will design a learning path that fits your goals, your level, and your pace.
I have more than ten years of experience teaching Chinese to foreign learners. Besides, I have worked with students from Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy and so on. My teaching is structured, patient, and focused on real communication—not just memorization. I track your progress and adjust each lesson to make sure you keep improving.
You are not just looking for a teacher who knows Chinese. You are looking for someone who can explain it clearly, support you patiently, and help you use it confidently in real life. That is exactly what I do. I combine professional teaching methods, cultural insight, and a warm, structured approach. My goal is not only to help you pass exams—but to help you dare to speak, know how to use Chinese, and truly understand the culture behind the language.

1. My Teaching Techniques and Methods:
-Communication-centered: I encourage students to speak from the very first lesson. I use comprehensible input, pictures, gestures, and contexts to help students understand Chinese naturally rather than memorize by rote.
-Task-based teaching: I design lessons around real-life tasks such as ordering food, shopping, asking for directions, traveling, job interviews, meetings, and socializing, so students learn to “do things” in Chinese.
-Multisensory and multimodal: I combine audio, video, Chinese character decomposition, role-play, flashcards, mini-games, and authentic materials to make lessons more vivid.
-Differentiated instruction: I adjust content according to students’ age, level, native language, learning goals, and learning styles. I can teach daily conversation, HSK preparation, business Chinese, Chinese for children, and more.
-Gentle error correction: I correct errors through recasts, contrasts, and playback of recordings, ensuring accuracy while protecting students’ confidence in speaking.
-Culture integrated into language: I explain the cultural logic behind tones, measure words, word order, forms of address, polite expressions, etc., helping students use Chinese more naturally.

2. Typical Lesson Structure:
-Warm-up and review (5–10 minutes): Review the key points from the previous lesson through chatting, Q&A, or mini-games.
-Goal introduction (3–5 minutes): Clarify today’s learning objectives and place them in a real-life scenario.
-Core input (10–15 minutes): Learn new vocabulary, sentence patterns, grammar, or Chinese characters, with examples and contextual understanding.
-Guided practice (10–15 minutes): Substitution drills, dialogue practice, sentence transformation, and role-play.
-Task output (10–15 minutes): Complete a real-life task, such as simulating ordering food, a job interview, making a phone call, or introducing one’s hometown.
-Summary and feedback (5 minutes): Review key points, correct typical errors, and give suggestions for the next lesson.
-Post-class extension: Assign practical homework and provide review materials, recordings, or practice suggestions.

3. What Makes Me Unique as a Teacher:
-More than ten years of experience in teaching language
-Personalized learning map: I first learn about your goals, difficulties, and interests, then design a learning path specifically for you.
-Low-pressure, high-interaction: I am patient and encouraging, and I am good at helping even shy students feel willing to speak.
-Strong cross-cultural communication skills: I understand the common difficulties students, who study Chinese as a foreign language, will face, such as tones, Chinese characters, word order, measure words, and cultural differences.
-Real, practical, and fun: I use authentic everyday language materials so that Chinese does not remain only in textbooks.

My goal is to help you not only pass exams, but also dare to speak, know how to use Chinese, and understand the culture. I welcome you to book a trial lesson with me, and we can create a Chinese learning plan that suits you!
