Über Andrew
I grew up in the United States and completed a double major in Comparative Literature and Philosophy at UC Berkeley. I later moved to Paris, where I completed my Master’s degree in philosophy at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne entirely in French. I am now pursuing a PhD in philosophy at Universität Leipzig, working across English, French, Spanish, and German.
I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring students from elementary school through university and adulthood in the United States and France. I can teach English, including academic writing, at any level, and I am fluent in French and Spanish, which I teach through Abitur level. Having learned several languages myself—and studied Latin in connection with my interests in comparative grammar and etymology—I am particularly attentive to how grammar, vocabulary, register, and idiom fit together across languages. My background in literature and philosophy also makes me especially strong in close reading, literary analysis, argument, and writing.
I am both philosophically and practically interested in learning. I enjoy teaching partly because explaining something clearly forces me to understand it better myself; teaching is something I do naturally but also reflect on closely. Outside academic work, I boulder, practice yoga, play music (I am a huge Beatles fan), and have recently enjoyed climbing in the Sächsische Schweiz.

I teach French from school level through Abitur, as well as conversation, literature, philosophy, and work with French texts at university level. Lessons can follow school coursework and assignments or focus independently on grammar, conversation, pronunciation, reading, or writing.
I learned French myself to full spoken and written fluency, lived for about six years in Paris, and completed my Master’s degree at the Sorbonne entirely in French. That gives me a perspective different from a native speaker’s: I know from experience which parts of French have to be consciously understood before they become natural.
I therefore pay particular attention to the structures that often block progress—verb tenses and moods, pronouns, articles, syntax, idiomatic expression, and the differences between written and spoken French—while making sure that explanation leads back into actual reading, writing, and conversation.
